Early-20th-century semis, terraces and Federation cottages sit shoulder to shoulder with walk-up flats, most of it brick or double-brick behind rendered facades.

Tight lot sizes mean shared walls, shared meter rooms in some of the older blocks, and access that's rarely as simple as walking straight up a driveway.

A switchboard upgrade on a semi here often means working around a party wall, coordinating with whoever's on the other side of it, and planning cable runs that don't have much spare room to move.

Gordons Bay marks the walkway edge toward Coogee, a rocky cove that draws a steady stream of snorkellers through summer, and the homes tucked into the streets nearby share the same early-1900s vintage as the rest of the bay.

Knox Street and Burnie Street sit further inland, away from the direct sea air, and the properties there tend to have escaped the heaviest corrosion even where the wiring itself is just as old.

That split matters when we're scoping outdoor fittings specifically. A light or point right on the foreshore needs a different spec to one three streets back, even in houses built the same year.
